Sober Intoxication of the Spirit: Filled With the Fullness of God (New Edition)

Sober Intoxication of the Spirit: Filled With the Fullness of God (New Edition)
Author: Father Raniero Cantalamessa O.F.M. Cap.

These are not drunk, as you suppose (Acts 2:15), Peter preaching to the crowd after the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We tend to overlook Peter's opening words to the crowd that first Pentecost morning, to our own peril. His denial of drunkenness in the wake of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit should stop us in our tracks. What was going on here? How did the apostles experience the Holy Spirit? What was he teaching them? How was he empowering them? What does this scene in the streets of Jerusalem mean for us today? Father Raniero Cantalamessa offers pastoral advice and leads the reader through passages of Scripture and the Fathers of the Church to remind us of the incalculable power of the Spirit available to us. This spiritual "intoxication" is an infilling through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and the action of God that purifies us of sin, renews the heart and enlightens the mind. As St. Augustine said of the Spirit, "He found you empty and he filled you. I like this kind of intoxication. The Spirit of God is both drink and light."

Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap., has been the papal preacher to Pope John Paul II’s pontifical household since 1980. He is a former professor of history of early Christianity, head of the department of religious studies at the Catholic University in Milan, member of the International Theological Commission and author of numerous books, including Loving the Church. He lives in Rome.

ABOUT ADC PROJECT:

🕊️The Awakening the Domestic Church (ADC) initiative was inspired by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, aiming to reinvigorate faith in God’s vision for traditional family life, which is seen as the cornerstone of all healthy societies. ADC emphasizes that Christian families, as "domestic churches," play a crucial role in mirroring the Trinity and embodying Jesus' presence within communities. This movement addresses concerns about the departure from Judeo-Christian moral foundations in society, a warning issued by Pope Paul VI in the 1960s, and emphasizes the church's mission to evangelize. Pope Saint John Paul II's introduction of the new evangelization, which focuses on contemporary methods to preach the Gospel and uphold the sacramental life, further supports this mission. He tasked Cardinal Ratzinger with writing the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the 1990s to ensure a correct understanding of the faith. Efforts were also made to restore full communion within the church by engaging with biblically-oriented Christians from other traditions. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI established a new Papal office, mobilizing over 800 individuals to encourage families to evangelize their neighborhoods, highlighting that a single family could influence 30 to 100 families through their evangelization efforts.

Embark with us on a mission to deepen spiritual connections and unite our communities in Christ. Let's spark a transformation, impacting each neighborhood heart by heart with Jesus's love.
