Story and Symbolism

The Madonnina, also commonly known as the Madonna of the Streets, was painted by the well-renowned artist, Roberto Ferruzzi (1854–1934) that won the second Venice Biennale in 1897. This painting's models were Angelina Cian (age 11) and her younger brother. Although not originally painted as a religious image, this painting became popularized as an image illustrating the Virgin Mary carrying her infant son and has become the most popular of Ferruzzi's works.
