Story and Symbolism

Matt Talbot was an Irish ascetic venerated by many Catholics for his piety, charity, and mortification of the body. He was an unskilled worker. Though he had lived alone for much of his life, Talbot had lived with his mother for a while. After sixteen years of drinking, Matt wanted to find a priest, go to confession, and make a vow to stop drinking. He sought sobriety through a lot of prayers, daily Mass, hard work, and self-sacrifice.
