Story & Symbolism:
Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy had a son named Edward. Cnut the Great's son – and his own half-brother – Harthacnut succeeded him. After a period of Danish dominance following Cnut's conquest of England in 1016, he restored the House of Wessex's rule. When Edward died in 1066, he was succeeded by Harold Godwinson, who was defeated and murdered at the Battle of Hastings in the same year by the Normans headed by William the Conqueror.
