Stories & Symbolism

Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego in 1531 on Tepeyac Hill near present-day Mexico City. She identified herself as the Blessed Virgin Mary and requested that a church be built in her honor. As a miraculous sign for the bishop, Juan Diego revealed roses blooming in winter inside his tilma, which then displayed the now-famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Today, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is one of the most beloved Marian devotions in the Catholic Church and is recognized as the Patroness of the Americas. Her image represents faith, compassion, protection, unity, and miracles for millions around the world.

Story Behind the Product

Our Lady of Guadalupe first identified herself as Mother of God and Mother of all mankind when she appears on the Tepeyac Hill in Mexico in 1531. An indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, saw a brilliant figure on the hill. After that, Juan Diego visited Juan de Zumárraga, who was the archbishop of what is now Mexico City. Zumárraga rejected him in disbelief and asked the future Saint to provide proof of his story and proof of the identity of the Lady.
