Story and Symbolism

Our Lady of Czestochowa is also recognized as Patron and Protector of Poland. She is commonly referred to as the Black Madonna for her dark image in the Blessed Virgin's very famous painting holding the Child Jesus. It is believed that the image has been at risk for centuries but was saved by unforeseen miracles and gave confirmation to healings that have been attributed to prayers to Our Lady of Czestochowa over the years. It was said that the smoke from candles illuminating the icon for being hidden for many years caused the darkened image.
