Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, is symbolized by the Paschal candle.
The sinless Christ who was created in the womb of His Blessed Mother is symbolized by the candle. The wick denotes His humanity, and the flame, both His soul and body, His Divine Nature.
A cross-shaped candle with five incense grains inside of it serves as a reminder of the five wounds on His hands, feet, and side as well as the fragrant spices used to prepare His Sacred Body for the tomb.
The candle is carried into the dark church during the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night by a priest or deacon. The candle is lit by a new fire, a representation of the eternal life we have in Christ. As he recites the prayer below, the priest blesses the candle, which represents Christ himself. He then inscribes a cross, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet (Alpha and Omega, "the beginning and the end"), and the current year in it. Finally, he fastens the five grains of incense to it.
During the Paschal season, up until Ascension Thursday, the Easter candle is lit every day during Mass.
