Story & Symbolism:

Lucia of Syracuse was a Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution, also called Saint Lucia or Saint Lucy. In the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Eastern Orthodox churches, she is regarded as a saint. As a Christian, the rejected bridegroom condemned Lucy and had the governor order her death. By gouging out her eyes, the governor had her tortured, but God restored her eyesight. Then the governor ordered her to be set ablaze. God interceded once more and she was rescued. Lucy was martyred with a knife later on. Saint Lucy is recognized today as the patroness of those who suffers from blindness and eye ailments.
