This special edition of Bible Basics for Catholics is part of The Ave Maria Press Parish Book Program.

Do you want to better understand how salvation history unfolds in the Old and New Testaments?

Whether you are new to reading scripture or have experience in studying the Bible, John Bergsma’s bestselling Bible Basics for Catholics offers an easy-to-read, straightforward, and thorough look at the “big picture” of salvation history.

Combining sound theology, academic expertise, and endearing playfulness, John Bergsma—a popular and award-winning scripture professor—provides a concise and non-intimidating view of God’s covenants with Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the great kings and prophets of Israel, and culminating with Jesus Christ. Bergsma also looks at what’s to come in the Wedding Feast of the Lamb in the book of Revelation.

Bible Basics for Catholics is perfect for anyone interested in better understanding the Bible, including those with no experience in reading it, RCIA candidates, students in middle school and high school religious education classes, book groups, and adult faith-formation participants. Bergsma’s fun stick figure drawings illustrate key points throughout the book.

After reading Bible Basics for Catholics, you will

receive the sacraments with greater enthusiasm,
live your Catholic faith with more zest,
keep learning more of God’s Word, and
want to share what you know with others.

Ave Maria Press

Serving the Catholic Community for Over 150 Years!

Ave Maria Press, established in 1865 by Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., Ave Maria Press remains committed to its core mission in more than 150 years. It began as the third apostolate of Holy Cross in the US and published "The Ave Maria" magazine by Fr. Sorin with three goals in mind: to glorify Mary, highlight Catholic families, and present the best American Catholic writing.

Ave Maria thrived for over 100 years and became the most popular Catholic magazine in the country. Under the leadership of Rev. Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., the magazine grew and started publishing hardcover books. Holy Cross religious, including priests, brothers, and sisters, played essential roles in the magazine's operation. After the magazine ceased publication in 1970, Ave Maria Press focused on book publishing and has since published works by notable Catholic authors.

Now owned by the United States Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Ave Maria Press remains one of the oldest Catholic publishing houses, specializing in religion textbooks, ministry resources, and books on prayer and spirituality.
