Composing Sacred Scripture: How the Bible Was Formed presents the fascinating story of the Bible’s formation. Taking shape over centuries, the Bible was incubated in the liturgical life of Hebrew and Christian communities, nourished by their prayer and preaching. Fr. Donald Senior deftly introduces readers to the anatomy of the Bible and the history of its development. Who wrote the texts? When were they written? How were the books of the canon chosen? Fr. Senior shares the best current Bible scholarship and also explains the Church’s teachings about the inspired and revealed written Word of God. This book will intrigue and satisfy everyone engaged in ministries of the Word and all who want to deepen their Christian faith.
Donald Senior, CP, is president emeritus, chancellor, and professor of New Testament studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He holds a licentiate in theology (STL) and a doctorate in New Testament Studies from the University of Louvain, Belgium. Fr. Senior has served on the Pontifical Biblical Commission since 2001. He is the general editor of The Bible Today and of The Catholic Study Bible (Oxford University Press, third revised edition, 2016) and has authored and edited numerous books and articles—among them, Jesus, A Gospel Portrait (Paulist Press, 1992), Why the Cross (Abingdon Press, 2014), and The Gift of Administration (Liturgical Press, 2016).
