Story & Symbolism: Lucia of Syracuse, also called Saint Lucia or Saint Lucy, was a Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution. She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Eastern Orthodox churches.
The rejected bridegroom denounced Lucy as a Christian and had the governor order her death. The governor had her tortured by gouging her eyes out, but God restored her eyesight. The governor then ordered her to be set on fire. Again, God interceded and she was saved. Lucy was later martyred with a dagger.
Saint Lucy is recognized today as the patroness of those who suffers from blindness and eye ailments.
Her feast day is December 13th.
