Count Cattani, who had met Francis in Assisi, saw the mountain as an idyllic place for contemplation and yearned for the people of Tuscany to embrace the Franciscan way of life. Isolated and serene, the mountain and its surrounding village provided the perfect backdrop for those seeking penance or solitude in a tranquil landscape. St. Francis and his followers built a stunning monastery retreat on the mountainside and discovered silver deposits in the area, allowing them to sustain a sanctuary for contemplative prayer.
