Historia y simbolismo:

El Papa Juan Pablo II fue Jefe de la Iglesia Católica y Soberano del Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano de 1978 a 2005. Fue elegido Papa por el Segundo Cónclave Papal de 1978, convocado tras la muerte del Papa Juan Pablo I, que había sido elegido para reemplazar al Papa Pablo VI en agosto, 33 días después. El cardenal Wojtyła fue elegido al tercer día del cónclave y, en homenaje a él, tomó el nombre de su predecesor. Se recuerda a Juan Pablo II por haber contribuido a poner fin al régimen comunista en su Polonia natal y, finalmente, en toda Europa.

Story and Symbolism

Pope John Paul II was Head of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of the State of Vatican City from 1978 to 2005. He was elected Pope by the Second Papal Conclave of 1978, which was called after the death of Pope John Paul I, who had been elected to replace Pope Paul VI in August, 33 days later. Cardinal Wojtyła was elected on the third day of the conclave and in tribute to him took the name of his predecessor. John Paul II is remembered as helping to bring an end to Communist rule in his native Poland and, finally, in Europe as a whole.
